  • Week One: July 13-17 from 9:30-11:30 am
  • Week Two: July 20-23 from 10 am -12 noon
  • $25, or FREE for registrants of Both PICO Camp and BIG MAN Camp
  • Open to the public, as well as single camp participants

2009 SAT Test Preparation Workshop

Brief Description

This is a series of two-hour workshops designed to prepare students in different subject area tests for the SAT. The workshops are intended to help students understand the contents of the tests and how to answer the test questions accordingly. An important aspect of the workshop is to provide strategies in taking the SAT and passing successfully.

Workshop Objectives

  • Familiarize students with the SAT subject areas.
  • Provide information about contents of subject areas and how to answer the questions.
  • Offer helpful tips and strategies for students on how to pass the different subject areas successfully.
  • Offer tools in writing an integrated and effective essay.
  • Reduce students' test taking anxiety.

SAT Curriculum for PICO

Week 1 - Introduction

  • Module 1 - SAT Basics
    1. Getting to know SAT
    2. What are the subject areas included in the SAT and what do they measure
    3. How do you answer SAT questions
    4. What do SAT scores mean
  • Module 2 - Test Taking Strategies
    1. Assessment of skills
    2. Writing an essay: components and what you need to know
      Check-up: Write an essay

Week 2 - Critical Reading Component

  • Module 1 - Comprehension Strategies
    Reading short and long passages
  • Model 2 - Vocabulary Building Strategies
    Decoding difficult words
    Check-up: Review Test

Week 3- Math Component

  • Module 1 - Basic Math Concepts
    Averages, Ratio, rates, Percents, Triangles and Equations Solving Word Problems
  • Module 2 - Mini-Test on Math Concepts

  • 10 years as Basic Skills Educator for Donald Londer Learning Center, Multnomah County Department of Community Justice
  • 10 years GED instructor at Portland Community College
  • 14 years experience as University counselor for a Jesuit University in the Philippines
  • 5 years as Career Counselor for an adult basic education program
  • Program development experience in improving student academic s progress and workplace skills.
  • Extensive background working with diverse population (multi-cultural, Limited English Proficiency, special needs and at-risk clients)
